Ten in a stew over MasterChef loser leak

17 Jun, 2010 04:00 AM
Viewers of Channel Ten's hit show MasterChef are outraged after a local newspaper outed tonight's evictee before the episode went to air.

The evictee was named by the North Shore Times, a bi-weekly newspaper in Sydney's north with a readership of just under 100,000, despite reportedly agreeing to a strict embargo.

The paper was finalised late yesterday and was due to hit the streets tomorrow, but was delivered to parts of its distribution area early this morning.

Readers are now reportedly calling the paper and Ten to complain.

The evictee was a member of the blue team who lost last night's group challenge.

A Ten spokeswoman confirmed the breach, saying the paper promised to respect the embargoed press release until 8.45pm.

"It is true, basically the North Shore Times had assured us that [the paper] would not be available until Friday, would not be on sale until Friday ... so they have broken an embargo," she said.

"They are now getting phone calls from people who don't want it ruined so ... we are trying to work with them to minimise it."

The spokeswoman said the paper had since pulled online versions of the story.

"We do expect papers to respect embargoes. We want viewers to watch it and see what happens," she said.

MasterChef continues to prove a rating success for Ten, averaging more than 1.5 million viewers a night.

Calls for comment have also been placed with Times editor Catherine Zuill and its publisher, Cumberland Newspapers.
