03 Jul 09 | Junee Pacific National train drivers will lose their jobs as the Junee depot closes down in 2010. 42 local drivers, some with over 30 years service will either have to accept a redundancy or apply for a job with the company in their northern Queensland operations. Pacific National has not offered the drivers a transfer to Queensland meaning any drivers will need to move north at their own expense.
03 Jul 09 | Success for dairy farmers Two NSW dairy farmers have taken out awards in the prestigious 2009 Dairy Business of the Year Awards. Neville and Ruth Kydd, who run 730 cows on their 371 hectare property at Finley, won two awards, being recognised for their business excellence in winning the Southern NSW category and also the Most Improved category.

26 Jun 09 | The current shortage of veterinarians in regional areas of NSW is being targeted with a partnership between the University of Sydney, Charles Sturt University (CSU) at Wagga and the Livestock Health and Pest Authority (LHPA).

The celebration dinner was a highlight with Heritage Golf President Tom Moore keeping the crowd entertained with a wonderful talk on the history of golf.
26 Jun 09 | Saleyard figures After 16 months in operation the Central Tablelands Livestock Exchange (CTLX) at Carcoar has sold 560,596 sheep and lambs. 135,274 cattle have also been sold through the complex since cattle sales commenced 12 months ago. This places the CTLX third behind Dubbo and Wagga in NSW cattle sales and fifth behind Wagga, Dubbo, Forbes and Griffith in sheep and lamb sales.
19 Jun 09 | Water allocation The NSW Farmers’ Association has raised strong concerns that water has been placed into a different portfolio than agriculture in the new NSW Government super agencies announced by the NSW Premier. Under the reshuffle, the water component of the Department of Water and Energy will fall under the new Environment, Climate Change and Water Department, while the Department of Primary Industries will fall under the new Investment and Infrastructure Department.
Junee Landcare’s big project
19 Jun 09 | The Junee Area Landcare Network (JALN) recently launched a project of international importance with the unveiling of their ‘Nesting Box for Fire Ravaged Junee and Districts Project’. The idea for this project developed at JALN meetings after the disastrous New Years bushfire in the Junee area in 2006.
19 Jun 09 | Wagga 2009 is the 70th Anniversary of the 1939 mobilisations, the raising of the 2nd A.I.F. and the creation of the Empire Air Training Scheme (E.A.T.S.), which led to the 1940 establishment of R.A.A.F. Bases at Forest Hill, Uranquinty, Temora, Narrandera and Cootamundra.
12 Jun 09 | Cootamundra New Zealand energy company TrustPower has approached a number of landowners in the Muttama Valley, between Cootamundra and Gundagai, about potentially installing wind turbines for generating electricity.

12 Jun 09 | Recent rain in southern NSW will be of immediate benefit to farmers however drought conditions still exist in NSW with the June figures showing the drought affected area has increased to 66 per cent (up from 60 per cent in May).
12 Jun 09 | Nuffield scholarships Applications for the 2010 Nuffield Farming Scholarships close on June 30, with 20 positions open to young farmers and farm managers for travel and research next year. Nuffield Australia chairman David Brownhill said it had never been more important for Australian farmers to gain first-hand knowledge of global agriculture, given the increasing volatility of international markets and growing environmental challenges.
05 Jun 09 | West Wyalong Yalgogrin North residents celebrated a unique piece of history when a new sign depicting the main street of Yalgogrin as it was in 1893 was unveiled. 116 years ago, during the gold mining boom, the population of Yalgogrin was around 3000 people.
05 Jun 09 | FarmDay success More than 730 families participated in this year’s ‘FarmDay’ which is designed to provide city families with the opportunity to visit a working property and get real hands on experience of life on the land. Held on May 30 and 31, farmer registrations were up by 33 percent this year, with total numbers increasing to 568.

Drought support still needed

22 May 09 | Hillston Hillston’s new main street upgrade has been completed and was recently officially opened by John Cobb. A large crowd was in attendance to witness the ceremony. The High Street upgrade began in January 2008 and the work has given a totally new appearance to the town’s business centre.
