Twelve community workshops across the Murrumbidgee catchment marks the beginning of an extensive consultation schedule for the development of the Next Generation Catchment Action Plan.
The Murrumbidgee CAP is being upgraded in consultation with the community, stakeholders and government departments to provide the strategic direction for natural resource management actions in the region.
Murrumbidgee CMA Acting Chair, Ms Sulari Goonetilleke said the workshops were the first step in developing new landscape targets, which specifically address issues affecting communities within the catchment.
“The purpose of the Next Generation CAP is to provide a list of agreed objectives for natural resources within the catchment for the next 10 years,” she said.
Catchment Action Plan reviews are being undertaken by each of the 13 Catchment Management Authorities across NSW in conjunction with their communities.
“We are embarking on an extensive consultation process to ensure that community members and other stakeholders including landholders and community groups can participate in the development of the Next Generation Catchment Action Plan from the
beginning”.
Ms Goonetilleke said the current Murrumbidgee CAP had served the organisation well and directed six years worth of projects within the catchment, however, times had changed and the Plan needed upgrading to allow for a fresh way of thinking focusing on ‘resilient’ landscapes.
