Profit-driven livestock marketing

12 Feb, 2010 06:27 AM
More than 1400 people have attending the KLR Marketing School in Australia and now southern NSW graziers will have the opportunity to attend a course on February 23 and 24 at the Country Comfort Wagga Wagga.

Rod Knight from Tamworth, Grahame Rees from Bathurst and Jim Lindsay from Hughenden introduced the system to Australia in 2004 after learning from its United States-based founder, Bud Williams.

Mr Williams’ believes knowing how to sell livestock is the key to success and the three Australian producers have explained his system at their two-day school for the past six years.

Adelong graziers, John and Sarah Roche of ‘Wondowie’, attended the KLR Marketing School three years ago.

“We went along because we were thinking about doing further trading and the course came recommended.

“The course taught us to put a value on our grass and allowed us to work out what to do with that grass.

“Learning how to put a value on our grass changed our whole way of thinking.

“I look at everything now as an asset for sale at any time, provided the price is right,” said Mr Roche.

The Roche’s traded in sheep as the opportunities arose, and were not selective on the class of sheep or cattle they bought.

“Through trading we’ve become very aware of all costs in the business, and the tools we use have taken the emotion out of trading,” Mr Roche said.

Rod Knight, said in a falling cattle market, graziers could feel trapped, with grass running out and the market falling below any prospect of profit.

“The key is knowing our ‘cost of carry’ so we can identify these profit margins,” Mr Knight said.
