Riverina beefs up

03 Feb, 2012 06:30 AM
The 2012 Stock & Land Beef Week was a great success with many cattle studs participating around the Riverina.

There were 263 studs representing 37 breeds making this year’s Beef Week the biggest ever.

Darryl Schipp of Doodle Cooma Poll Herefords and Schipps Red Angus and Corey Ireland of Irelands Angus were two Wagga Wagga producers to participate in the 2012 Beef Week.

Mr Ireland was participating in his fifth year of Beef Week and said Irelands Angus open day was a great opportunity for buyers to see the genetics used at his stud.

“I have on display a sample of my sale herd that will be auctioned at our autumn sale,” Mr Ireland said.

“Beef Week is a great opportunity for potential buyers to look over the sale bulls and cows with no pressure.

“There have been great seasonal conditions this year for feed, so the bulls are all looking good and are ready to go,” he said.

Herefords and Angus studs made up almost half the studs involved with 77 whiteface studs and 49 Angus studs opening their gates to the

public.

Daryl Schipp was one of these producers and showcased his herd of Poll Hereford and Red Angus bulls and heifers.

“We are long time exhibitors of Beef Week as we feel it is a great way to showcase our stud in a relaxed atmosphere,” Mr Schipp said.

“We have had a great number of visitors and have already sold a bull this morning, it’s been a great day,” he said.

Sally and Dow Prass from Cowra were at Mr Schipps stud to look at increasing their female herd on their Red Angus stud, “Rigadoon”.

“This is our first time visiting Mr Schipps farm and we are impressed,” Mrs Prass said.

“We like to visit the studs during Beef Week as it’s great to come over and have a look at what genetics they are using on other studs.

“As a breeder myself I feel these open days are fantastic.

“I believe it attracts a lot of follow ups from buyers for future investments,” she said.

According to Beef Week Director Geoff Phillips, Beef Week was a great opportunity for seedstock and commercial producers to compare breeds and studs within breeds before making buying decisions.

“There were thousands of cattle on display with potential bull buyers out in force looking to buy bulls or inspecting bulls that will be coming up for auction at on-property bull sales this autumn,” Mr Phillips said.

“Beef Week was a great opportunity for cattle producers to discover how each breed can perform in different environments and meet the needs of various markets.

“The 50 studs with the foresight to enter the first Beef Week 20 years ago could not have envisaged the event would go from strength to strength and now is one of the most important if not the most important marketing activities for seedstock producers in south-east Australia.

“Despite droughts, bush fires and floods during some Beef Weeks, it continues to grow and the Beef Week committee and Stud Beef Victoria are determined to keep it as a low cost, high value marketing activity for seedstock producers” he said.
