The sheep complex has also received favourable comments from vendors, agents and transport companies.

Insect pests

Farmers will need to be continually monitoring their crops and pastures for insect damage.

There have been reports of several species of pasture cockchafers causing damage in pastures.

Yellowheaded pasture cockchafer damage has occured in the Crookwell area in both lucerne and pastures, with concentrated ‘hot spots’ approximately 10-15 metres in size within some paddocks.

Blue oat mites have hatched in the some regions of southern New South Wales, where they were found on emerging canola plants. Farmers need to be vigilant

Dairy Business of the Year - finalists announced

An outstanding selection of dairy farmers entered the second Dairy Business of the Year competition.

Twenty finalists have been named by organisers with Deniliquin farmers, Danny and Nikki Everingham and Eric Ward and Finley farmers Peter and Su Tyrrell in the running to win major awards.

The competition focuses on dairy business management under the challenge of high feed prices and drought conditions.

Pregnancy toxaemia causing problems

Pregnancy toxaemia occurs when ewes in the last third of pregnancy receive inadequate feed to meet the energy requirements of the lambs in them with late pregnant twin bearing ewes need about 80 per cent more energy to maintain their condition than dry sheep.

A common problem this autumn is that the dry feed from summer is of poor quality, and while hay and silage are cheaper sources of energy than grain they are not meeting the energy requirements of late pregnant ewes even when fed generously.

The situation is being compounded by the lack of green pick in most pastures.

If pregnancy toxaemia occurs the aim is to supplement the sheep with energy rich supplement such as cereal grain.

Naturally some care has to be taken when introducing grain to sheep or grain poisoning can result in stock losses.

Eskalin is a commercial product that can be added to cereal grain to reduce the risk.

New MLA beef

campaign kicks off

The first phase of the long-term campaign will focus on beef casseroles, and is spearheaded by an eye-catching television commercial aimed at getting people to serve up the classic winter-warming meal.

MLA’s General Manager of Marketing, David Thomason said the campaign’s focus on one meal type is a result of consumer research that identified steak was usually the only thing thought of when consumers were asked to think about a beef meal.

“If we are to increase the frequency of beef meals in the consumer’s kitchen we need to encourage them to think beyond steak”, Mr Thomason said.
