Hillston

Hillston’s new main street upgrade has been completed and was recently officially opened by John Cobb. A large crowd was in attendance to witness the ceremony. The High Street upgrade began in January 2008 and the work has given a totally new appearance to the town’s business centre. The project has made the High Street precinct a vibrant part of Hillston and has boosted the social and economic development of the town, according to Carrathool Shire Mayor Peter Laird. After the official ceremony, a market day was held at Memorial Park which was also well supported by the local community to cap off an important day for the western Riverina town.

West Wyalong

Around 200 West Wyalong residents celebrated the re-opening of McCann Park after extensive work was finalised on the dam, gardens, play and fitness equipment, and other amenities. The park was named after community leader Len McCann, who served on the Bland Shire Council for over 30 years and was also involved in many community groups in the town. The new facilities were officially opened by Mark Dodds from

the Department of Environment and Climate Change, which helped fund the major environmental works at the park. The project at McCann Park is part of an upgrade to all the parks in the Bland Shire.

Jerilderie

Keith and Marion Palmer were afforded a farewell luncheon by the Jerilderie Shire Council as they plan a move to Albury in June. The Palmers have given over 50 years of service to the Jerilderie community during their time in the district. Both have been tireless workers for many organisations. Keith gave his time to the Rural Fire Service, Rural Lands Protection Board and many aspects of the agricultural industry. Marion was involved with the Show Society, Country Womens Association, Uniting Church, Australia Day Committee, as well as being a Justice of the Peace and Civil Marriage Celebrant.
