Wagga
In the wake of community outrage over the failure of the State Government to fund the building of a new Wagga Base Hospital, the local State Member, Daryl Maguire has called on the NSW Government to honour its promises and commitments to build the facility. All residents in the Riverina are dumbfounded that this essential project has not yet been funded. A petition, which calls on the Government to provide public funding, or
negotiate a commercial arrangement, and to nominate a start date for the construction of a new Base Hospital during this parliamentary term has been circulated throughout the region. A strong response is expected from people in all areas of the Riverina.
Grenfell
Gren fell is gearing up for The Henry Lawson Festival of Arts from June 3-8, with a range of new activities (and some old favourites) that will keep all visitors to the town entertained over the Festival period. With special guest Max Cullen and ex-Seekers band member Keith Potger in attendance the significance of the Festival continues to grow. Auburn Carr at Weddin Shire Council has been kept busy fielding enquiries about this years Festival and is expecting an excellent response from people from near and far over the long weekend.
Cowra
Cowra’s Japanese Garden and the Cowra Visitors Centre have joined forces with the Canowindra’s Age of Fishes Museum in a move that is hoped to increase visitor numbers to both towns. Fiona Ferguson, the manager of the Age of Fishes Museum was formally the tourism officer at Cowra and sees benefits in the combined approach for both communities. This combined approach makes a lot of common sense as both towns are heavily reliant on the tourism dollar and should result in higher numbers of tourists to the Cowra and Cabonne Shires.
Narrandera
With State Water undertaking works upstream of the Yanco Weir, the Murrumbidgee River at Narrandera dropped to low levels revealing the wreck of the paddle steamer Wagga Wagga. There is not much left of the vessel except for the steam engine, axle and paddle hub and remains of the exterior of the hull. The uncovering of the wreck is a stark reminder of the current drought and the glorious days of river transport when paddle steamers like the Wagga Wagga were the pride of the inland river systems of Australia.
Forbes
Signi ficant historic sites, affiliated with bushranger Ben Hall are to be listed with the Heritage Council of NSW’s register. Independent NSW MP Dawn Fardell has welcomed the NSW Heritage Council’s decision to extend the closing date for submissions on the proposed heritage listing of Ben Hall sites in the central west. Due to the scale of public interest, the submission period has been extended to the July 8 to ensure more time to express their views on the Ben Hall site nominations. The six locations being considered are Escort Rock, Cliefden, Wandi, the Bushranger Hotel and both Ben Hall’s death site and grave. The significance of the bushranger era in the mid 19th century cannot be underestimated and the legend of Ben Hall and his gang in the Forbes, Eugowra and Canowindra districts must be preserved for future generations. Forbes has its annual Ben Hall Festival and any further way to promote this event with both the Heritage Council and Tourism NSW would be a boost for Forbes.
