Wagga

2009 is the 70th Anniversary of the 1939 mobilisations, the raising of the 2nd A.I.F. and the creation of the Empire Air Training Scheme (E.A.T.S.), which led to the 1940 establishment of R.A.A.F. Bases at Forest Hill, Uranquinty, Temora, Narrandera and Cootamundra. The Temora Aviation Museum has kindly donated a Wirraway flypast on the day to help commemorate this historical occasion, which is attracting great interest from people from a wide area of Australia. Organisers are anticipating a major event, with indications of participation from five NSAA Sub Branches, two RSL Sub Branches, three RNSWR Associations and several Vietnam Veterans Association branches. There will also be excellent support from past and current serving ADF Members. Last year, the Riverina event proved to be the largest in Southern NSW and subsequently was able to present the Mayor of Wagga with the National RFDC Best City Award.

Hay

Following the $303 million sale of water from the Twynam group to the Federal Government, three Hay district properties “Mungadal”, “Gundaline” and “Cobran” will continue to operate as is. The company is looking to the future and will be concentrating on its extensive cattle and sheep production enterprises. It will also utilise its extensive ground water entitlements. The ‘sold’ water entitlements had not been available to the company for several years and the immediate effect on the Hay community will not be large but the long term implications for the town’s economy remains unanswered

Parkes

92 year old Len Unger has been a member of the Parkes Historical Society for 53 years and has received a 2009 NSW Senior’s Week Achievement Award from popular Australian actress Lorraine Bailey. The ceremony was held in Sydney, where 61 recipients were honoured for their contribution to community life. Mr Unger has spent a lot of time and money on his passion for vintage machinery and often attended clearing sales and purchased machinery items for the Museum. His efforts have ensured the history of the Parkes district is not lost on the current generation.

West Wyalong

Bland Shire Council will receive $1.5 million to build a purpose designed dementia day care centre, Meals On Wheels distribution facility and a Home and Community Care centre on Council land next to the Waratah Village in West Wyalong. This money has come from the Home and Community Care (HACC) program which is supported by both State and Federal Governments. The development approval is currently being processed and a tender process will occur to build the major asset for residents of West Wyalong and the Bland Shire.

Darlington Point

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Forests NSW’s timber harvesting and associated road works in south-western NSW has been prepared by independent consultants, covering red gum forests in the central Murray, lower Murray and Murrumbidgee, and includes the towns and surrounding communities of Deniliquin, Barham, Balranald, Narrandera and Darlington Point. It also includes white cypress forests around the towns of Forbes, Narrandera and Condobolin. The EIS concludes that there is unlikely to be a significant impact on the majority of threatened species, populations or endangered ecological communities or their habitats which are known to occur in the study area.
