Coolamon

A century of golf in Coolamon was celebrated in the town with a special weekend of activities attended by many local and visitors alike. The celebration dinner was a highlight with Heritage Golf President Tom Moore keeping the crowd entertained with a wonderful talk on the history of golf. On the sand green golf course several special events were held including the Hickory Tournament, which provided an interesting challenge for the golfers who took part. The Coolamon Golf Club has hosted many important events and this centenary celebration was a fitting way for club to mark a milestone in its history.

Hillston

The Australiana Bush Festival in Hillston on Saturday, July 11 at the Showground is a biennial fundraising event that is warmly embraced by the community, local businesses and representative industries. Organised by the Hillston Lions Club and with the help of many sponsors, the festival offers a day of unique folk and cultural heritage which celebrates the diverse history and heritage of early Australian activities to the Western NSW region. The festival has tremendous support from the Hillston community but in return all money raised on the day goes towards new infrastructure projects in the town.

Orange

The largest road building project in Orange’s history will see a 5.9 kilometre bypass of North Orange, with many benefits for the Central West’s biggest city. The $15 million project will take three years to complete providing 65 full-time construction and engineering jobs. Orange City Council will receive a $10 million grant from the Federal Government’s Auslink 2 program to help fund the project. Transport operators, especially heavy vehicle drivers will appreciate the completed bypass as it will take traffic out of busy Summer Street in Orange’s CBD.

Finley

The MaxPotential Youth Leadership Program is receiving excellent community support. The 22 week youth leadership program is designed to help young people build self confidence, allowing them to set and achieve personal and career goals. Individual mentoring by tutors and group sessions feature in the program, which mirrors a similar project at Deniliquin. The individual mentoring of young people by community members is a focal point of the program and the willing participation by many individuals has been tremendous.

Morundah

Altho ugh many people in the region richly deserved Queen’s Birthday Honours, David Fahey’s OAM for service to the arts and to the Morundah community was a highlight. Arriving in the village in 1997, Mr Fahey’s involvement in the community has seen many innovative projects, but the annual Opera in the Bush is the shining light. Building a venue alongside his hotel, the aptly named Paradise Palladium has hosted several concerts drawing opera lovers from far and wide, with crowds of up to 1000 patrons in attendance. Mr Fahey is also involved in a project to have the village powered by solar energy in the future and is also a Councillor for the Urana Shire.

Young

Young Shire’s new Tourism Manager Shannon O’Connor has settled in well to the role. After living overseas for the past 12 years in the United Kingdom and Europe, Mr O’Connor intends to improve the tourism market for the town and district. Having seen the tourism potential in Young and surrounding district, Mr O’Connor is keen to explore all available options to promote the ‘Cherry Capital’ as a major tourist destination.
