Yass

A $15 million project is set to commence this year on raising the height of the Yass Dam wall. The project will see the water capacity increase from 872 megalitres to 2460 megalitres greatly improving the water storage situation for residents of Yass. The original dam was built in 1927. Yass Valley Council is confident that it can access Federal Government funding for 50 per cent of the $15 million cost. If these funds are not secured, residents of the Shire may face an increase in rates to pay for the much needed project, which will proceed.

A group of local landholders, interested in diversifying into farm agritourism, is currently undertaking a program facilitated by the Southern Cross University. 20 farmers from 13 properties situated along the Long Paddock touring route have commenced the program. The course will help the farmers develop a plan to attract tourists to their farms and provide activities that will give their visitors authentic experiences that reflect the history and culture of the south west Riverina.
