Barellan

Barellan is holding its inaugural “Head Over Heels” Masters Games over three days (March 5-7) with people from a wide area of NSW keen to participate in the nine sports being played. Cricket, darts, tennis, netball, triathalon, touch football, lawn bowls, swimming and team penning are being played. An official opening ceremony on Friday March 5 at 7.30pm, a formal dinner dance on Saturday night and closing ceremony and medals presentation after all events are completed will ensure the Masters Games are a success. The Masters Games will be the largest community event since Barellan celebrated its centenary in October last year.

Young

The township of Young and its charity organisations are combining with both NSW and Federal Government agencies to provide support to the workers who lost their jobs after the sudden closure of Burrangong Meat Processors earlier this month. There is still a high level of uncertainty for these workers and their families and the community support is being welcomed by many.

Grenfell

Planning is underway for the 53rd consecutive Henry Lawson Festival in Grenfell and the Weddin Shire on the long weekend in June. Planning workshops have been held and the many volunteers that make the Festival happen have received valuable information from event management consultant John Allen. The committee is looking at improving the marketing of the event, increasing the range of activities and how to cater for a wider audience. Realising that there are over 8,000 festivals celebrated in Australia each year, the committee is working towards lifting the profile of this important festival.

Yass

Major power provider Origin Energy has purchased two proposed wind farm precincts in the Yass Valley. The takeover of the planned Coppabella Hills and Marilba Hills wind farms from Epuron suggests Origin Energy is confident of receiving NSW Government approval for the project that will cost in excess of $1 billion. The Coppabella Hills project will see over 80 wind turbines built on 15 properties with 70 turbines planned for ten sites at Marilba Hills. The long term project will be approved directly by the NSW Government, bypassing the Yass Valley Shire Council.

Booligal

Recent rain above Hillston has resulted in some good run off into the Lachlan River. It was predicted that water would reach the lower Lachlan town of Oxley by mid March and the chance of water now reaching this area has been greatly enhanced by the recent rain. According to local residents vast sections of the river bed are dry and have been for a considerable period of time and a substantial flow will have to be maintained for a long time for water to get to the lower reaches of the Lachlan River.
