Cootamundra

Cootamundra’s Muttama Creek Regeneration Group has received a major boost, receiving $11,000 from the Murrumbidgee catchment Authority.

Since its inception the Muttama Creek Regeneration Group has made major inroads into improving the water quality and appearance of Cootamundra’s main waterway.

The funding will be used to improve the creek from the Poole Street causeway through to the Wattle Grove sub division.

Much of the land which the group plans to work on is private land, however the landowner is pleased to be working with the group to achieve a positive outcome.

The 200 metre stretch of creek will be cleared of exotic plants before it is revegetated with native species.

Work will be undertaken on both sides of the creek.

Young

Young Shire Council has appointed a Heritage Advisor to aid the future direction of the shire.

It will be High Ground Consulting’s task to provide a comprehensive, informative and flexible framework of policies and controls to guide the public and developers and to establish a future direction for the shire, as well as ensure that the built and natural environments of the shire are developed and utilised in a consistent structured and sustainable manner.

The position is being funded jointly with the Heritage Branch of the Department of Planning.

Tumut

Tumut Shire Council has called on Green Businesses to Get Involved in an Environmental Expo and Tree Day on July 31.

The expo will be staged at the Tumut Railway Precinct.

Traditionally held in conjunction with National Tree Day, the Environmental Expo is an opportunity for district residents to learn about sustainable living, with a focus on reducing the impact on the environment.

Now in its seventh year, the event has outgrown its venue and all expectations, and will this year move to the Railway Precinct to accommodate the growing number of exhibitors and event patrons.

The day features a wide variety of information and product stalls including water and energy conservation, waste minimisation and recycling, water wise gardening and the highly anticipated free tree giveaway.

For more information on how to get involved with the Environmental Expo and Tree Day, contact event organiser Austin Dewey at Council on (02) 6941 2551.

Lockhart

The Rock to Boree Creek branch line is set to be upgraded as part of the recent NSW budget.

A total of $4.3 million was allocated to the Rock to Boree Creek branch line in Lockhart Shire.

Although the growers’ wish list of having the branch line upgraded to carry larger locomotives didn’t get up, stakeholders such as local government and the farming community won’t be forced to bare the brunt of the upgrade.

Chief Executive Officer of Rail Infrastructure Corporation Terry Brady said $4.3 million has been allocated for The Rock to Boree Creek branch line to maintain it as a class 5 line.

This will include a bridge at Tootool, replacing sections of the wooden sleepers with steel sleepers, repairs to culverts and level crossings and ballasting the track.

The work is to “maintain the line to class 5 level and to ensure current loads continue to be carried on it,” Mr Brady said.
