Assistance dog takes the next step

The first dog in a pilot program to assist diabetics living in the Riverina has found a new home after months of training at the Junee Correctional Centre.

Jesse, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, is now being trained with a Wagga owner after Assistance Dogs Australia program was unable to find a suitable candidate in Junee.

He is the first diabetic alert dog to be trained as part of the Pups in Prison program to assist people with the condition by alerting them when their blood glucose levels are abnormally low.

Assistance Dogs Australia’s Ruth Stockton said Jesse had begun scent training and was doing well.

The obedience training carried out by inmates at the Junee Correctional Centre has helped Jesse proceed with the program with a second dog entering the program as a result.

Other dogs currently being trained at the centre are also due to travel to Sydney in the coming weeks to complete six months of intensive training before they are placed with a new owner.
