n Anne Corcoran, Reading Recovery Teacher at St Joseph’s Primary has received special recognition from the St Joseph’s community for her dedication to her students’ education.

This is the second time Anne has received an ASG Inspiration Teaching Award.

Ms Corcoran is currently a literacy intervention teacher at St Joseph’s where she works with students from all classes who are experiencing difficulties mastering literacy concepts.

Yass

n Yass Valley Council has reviewed the Road and Traffic Authority's plans for the Barton Highway future duplication, and suggested a number of alterations.

Council operations staff met with the RTA on a number of occasions during the development of the concept design to provide input.

After viewing the RTA's proposed design that has recently been on exhibition, council has submitted a request for further changes.

Yass Valley Council has received a grant of $500,000 from the NSW Environmental Trust to remediate the former gasworks site on Dutton Street.

The Yass Gasworks operated as a coal carbonising plant between 1892 and 1966.

The site has since been used by council as a depot, and is currently leased to Elgas and the Yass Antique Farm Machinery Club for storage purposes.

The site has been the subject of six investigations between 1993 and 2010 by consultants employed by council.

In 2010, detailed site investigations were undertaken to further delineate soil and groundwater impact.

These investigations confirmed the presence of liquid or viscous tar impacted soil, solid tar, coke and ash-impacted soil and impacted groundwater to varying degrees.

Junee

n The rugby league community is rejoicing following news amenities at Willow Park are to be revamped.

A Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program grant of $119,000 was awarded for construction of the first stage of redevelopment.

Junee Shire Council engineering services manager Colin Macaulay confirmed the funds would be used to build a kiosk, and hopefully a new broadcast box.

n The Broadway Athenium has been entered in this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards.

The Friends of the Athenium and Cultural Centre put the building in the running for the Heritage Branch Cultural Conservation Award.

Last week the Athenium, which is currently being refurbished, hosted Tidy Towns assessor Michael Bogle who gauged the Athenium’s cultural contribution to Junee.

Young

n The Mercy Health Services will celebrate 100 years in Young with a Masquerade Centenary Ball in October. The black tie event will be held in the newly refurbished Young Town Hall and promises to be a gala night to remember with entertainment by Big Boss Groove, a ten piece band from Canberra. The Sacred Heart Hospital as it was originally known was established by Father Hennessy and was the first Catholic Hospital outside Sydney.

n The Young Society of Artists is hositng a creative workshop “Play with Paint’ on September 11, sponsored by the Young District Arts Council. The workshop will be held in Studio One in the Southern Cross Hall in Main Street by tutor Julie Smith. The workshop is aimed at both artists and those who may have never painted before.
